Legendary Haircut of the Week: Emerson

The Hair:

The “Soul Glow” Perm.

The Player:

When Middlesbrough became an inexplicably attractive destination to foreign stars in the mid-90’s, Emerson Moisés Costa rejected interest from Inter Milan and AS Roma deciding that the sunny shores of Teeside would suit him and his Portuguese wife better.

He was wrong. Being not quite as ace as countryman Juninho Paulista, he was unable to prevent ‘Boro from losing two cup finals and getting relegated in 1997. He was also by now on the receiving end of some serious grief from his wife who was finding life in the North-East cold and grey. This is evidenced via a sparkling pun courtesy of www.mfc.co.uk:

“Unfortunately, Mrs Emerson didn’t like to be beside the Teeside”.

He then embarked on a series of unauthorised absences in an attempt to get the hell out of there. Reportedly, interest from Barcelona manager Sir Bobby Robson who had previously managed Emerson to two Portuguese Championships and a Portuguese Player of the Year award was rife at the time. But he ended up joining Tenerife.
