Legendary Haircut of the Week: Frank Worthington

The Hair:

Astonishing, TV-advert-worthy, brunette lion’s mane.

Hair so lustrous and luxurious it re-writes the rule-book on how fine a man’s hair can be. No wonder women flocked in droves to fall at his feet.

The Player:

A skillful, nonconformist forward who began his career at Huddersfield Town and went on to play for many clubs too numerous to mention. He made a grand total of 757 English League appearances scoring 234 goals in the process.

Frank certainly comes from a footballing family; his older brothers Dave and Bob also played professionally, thus completing a trio of solidly named Worthington lads. This football ability and naming convention also filtered down to the next generation of Worthington, as his nephew Gary also played professionally.

As is blindingly obvious from the photo, Frank was something of a ladies’ man. After retiring, he turned to the after-dinner speaking circuit and also published an autobiography titled One Hump Or Two. The cover of the book is cleverly suggestive of how much sugar Frank prefers to take with his tea, but I suspect that the title is slyly referencing Frank’s particular interest in the aforementioned ladies. Very subtley.

He’s my new favorite player.
